The process of creating my paintings often begins in a scrap metal yard, in a dumpster, in and abandoned parking lot or on a street corner.  There I take basically anything that catches my eye: an old street sign, a car door, a tabletop, a piece of an old refrigerator. This discovery will sit in my studio until inspiration strikes, then to be cleaned, primed, and transformed. The finished piece might include a mixture of paint, pencil, scraps of paper, Christmas tree lights, or old lace. Far from industrial or cluttered, my work is trying to reflect the beauty of things discarded in both: materials and the subject matter.

‘Reading is Fun’ -Mixed media 68×36 This painting was created by several in inspirations. First, the panels were found in Memphis on Summer Ave in front of the Antique Warehouse. I believe they were part of an armoir or dresser. This piece can be hung or placed on the floor. Two hinges keep the painting together. The glittery cuffs on her dress came from a jeweled pillow case. The sparkles compliment her shimmering eyeshadow. Vertically, on the right hand side of the painting are the words “Reading is Fun” in Arabic and English. A combination of Venetian Plaster, acrylic, latex, and craft paint was used. Secondly, I have wanted to do a “Dolly” piece for years. Everything about her is BIG (except her feet- size 5). Lastly, as a token of my appreciation, I simply wanted to paint her. My children get a free book every month because of her Imagination Library foundation providing books from birth to all babies born in the state of Tennessee.
